The future is starting now. We've witnessed an explosion in integrated intelligent technologies spanning Internet of Things, smart cities, smart speakers, and ring cams in recent years. Made exponentially more powerful because of artificial intelligence, these technologies promise to continue to immesh themselves into the daily lives of citizens worldwide. The advent of powerful 5G networks will further connect these devices to make possible previously unimaginable technologies like autonomous vehicles and drone delivery. But, we've learned some painful lessons about creating powerful technologies before we've created guidelines for the responsible building and deploying them. Given the risk that these interconnected devices present for privacy, security, and human rights, we need to create human-centered principles for their responsible deployment. Despite that, there has been surprisingly few initiatives aimed at addressing the whole ecosystem of interconnected devices from an ethical perspective. Recently a group of experts came together to produce the "Halcyon Principles" for these devices. Our panel will use the principles to frame the discussion.
